5 Healthy Habits to Help You Feel Better

Healthy Habits

When life feels busy or overwhelming, it’s often the small, consistent choices that make the biggest difference. Building simple, healthy habits into your day-to-day life can help support your mental health, boost your energy levels and improve your overall wellness.

Here are five healthy lifestyle habits you can start today to help you feel better naturally.

1. Make Sleep a Priority

Sleep is one of the primary foundations of good health. However, according to a 2024 study, nearly three in four Australians (71%) reported struggling to get a good night’s sleep, which is approximately 14.8 million adults!

Simply adding a few healthy sleep habits can improve your sleep quality drastically and help with mental clarity as well as physical energy during the day. Aim for a consistent bedtime routine that helps your body wind down.

Next time you’re getting ready for bed, try these few simple steps to help your mind and body wind down:

  1. Make your bedroom cool, quiet, and comfortable – consider blackout curtains, earplugs, or a fan.
  1. Put your devices away – avoid late night doom scrolling!
  1. Try calming practices – reading, gentle stretches or even simple breathwork.
  1. Keep a consistent sleep schedule – go to bed and wake up at the same time each day.

2. Stay Hydrated Throughout the Day

Hydration plays a vital role in overall wellness. Drinking enough water helps the body function smoothly. From aiding digestion to improving concentration and balancing energy. A reusable bottle can serve as a helpful reminder to sip regularly, and adding fruit or herbs can make each glass more enjoyable.

Did you know: A 2024 survey by Hydralyte revealed that approximately 73% of Australians are not meeting their daily fluid intake needs, falling short of the recommended 8–10 glasses of water per day.

3. Move Your Body – Find the Joy in Movement!

Exercise doesn’t have to mean hours at the gym. Walking, yoga, dancing in the kitchen, or even stretching at your desk all count. Regular movement helps reduce stress, improves circulation and supports overall wellbeing. The key is consistency and finding something you actually enjoy.

4. Fuel Your Body with Nutritious Foods

Eating a variety of nutrient-rich foods supports your body and mind. Focus on fresh vegetables, fruit, lean proteins and healthy fats to maintain energy and balance. Preparing simple, wholesome meals in advance can help you ensure you’re fueling your body with the nutrients it needs to thrive.

Did you know: Only 6.1% of adults and 8.5% of children met the combined recommended daily intake of both fruits and vegetables, according to a study in 2022.

Even small changes can make a big difference. Try adding an extra serving of fruit or vegetables to your meals each day. Over time, these simple steps can add up to lasting energy, improved wellbeing and a stronger foundation for healthy habits.

5. Practice Mindfulness or Relaxation Daily

Mindfulness doesn’t have to take long to be effective. Just 5-10 minutes is enough to calm your mind and support emotional wellbeing. Try meditation apps, journaling, breathwork or simply sitting quietly with a cup of tea. These small practices can reduce stress and help you feel more present.

Here are a few mindfulness tips (choose one or a few that work for you):

  • Pause and take three deep breaths – notice how you feel.
  • Notice one thing you’re grateful for today, big or small.
  • Spend 5 minutes journaling your thoughts to clear your mind.
  • Go for a walk without your phone – Crazy, we know! But try it and embrace the clarity of being present in the moment.
  • Close your eyes, inhale deeply for 4 counts, hold 4, exhale 4. Repeat.

Small changes make a BIG difference!

Like raindrops filling a bucket, small daily choices eventually overflow into big results. You don’t need to change everything at once – start with one or two of these daily wellness tips and build from there. Over time, small changes become powerful habits that support your health, happiness and overall wellbeing.
