What is plant-based medicine?

Some prescription-only plant-based therapies are derived from the cannabis plant and may be considered for patients who meet eligibility criteria under Australian regulations.

These products act on the body’s endocannabinoid system (ECS), a network involved in regulating processes such as mood, sleep, appetite and immune function.

The cannabis plant contains over 140 naturally occurring compounds. Two of the most well known are:

THC (Tetrahydrocannabinol) – one of the compounds found in cannabis.

CBD (Cannabidiol) – a non-intoxicating compound that may be considered in some circumstances.

Because responses vary between individuals, dosing is usually approached cautiously, with healthcare providers often following a ‘start low and go slow’ method.

Access to medicinal cannabis requires a prescription. Healthcare professionals assess each patient’s needs and determine whether treatment may be appropriate within the regulatory framework.
